Interlibrary Loan PolicyAPPROVED: Library Board, Date: 3/90, Section: 4300
Interlibrary loan policy or resource sharing is defined as the loaning of materials and information between libraries.
1. The Mohave County Library District supports interlibrary
loan networking and encourages its use among patrons and
libraries. The District will participate whenever possible in
cooperative interlibrary loan programs and will abide by
established rules and regulations. 2. As the public library of Mohave County, the Mohave County
Library District serves as a contact for other types of libraries
in the County that wish to use the various components of Arizona's
cooperative efforts (i.e., AZNET (Arizona Interlibrary Loan
Network), Serials Online in Arizona (SOLAR), State Reference
Center, AMIGOS Library Network and so forth). Interlibrary loan
services are available to all Mohave County Library District
cardholders in good standing and all other libraries in the county
(school libraries, college libraries, special libraries, and so
forth). 3. The basic premise of the state's cooperative network is that local libraries will exhaust local resources before attempting to find materials outside the District. Through ILL, resources of libraries throughout the United States and the world are available and will be accessed if local, county, and state resources cannot fill the need of a library user. In return, any unique item that is available in a local library will be available to patrons of other libraries on the same basis it is available to local patrons. Interlibrary loan requests must come from a library. Individuals requesting materials be sent to them, will be referred to their local library. 4. Any materials can be requested through ILL, although the
loaning library determines what will be sent. Generally, libraries
will loan fiction and nonfiction books, copies of magazine
articles, genealogical materials, out-of-print books, technical
materials, thesis materials, and items on microfilm/fiche.
Frequently, libraries will not loan audio/visual materials, entire
magazines, rare books, new books in their collection for less than
six months, reference materials, popular title paperbacks, some
genealogical materials, and some Ph.D. dissertations. When in
doubt as to whether or not certain material is available for ILL,
make a request. The District strives to maintain basic reference
and current materials that are popularly requested or needed so
that these items need not be requested through ILL. 5. The District will strive to provide fee-free interlibrary loan services. Costs charged by loaning libraries may be passed on to the patron, but patrons will be notified in advance and given the option of receiving the materials as priced or not.
